Tips for hanging two hammocks from same set of trees

My son and I will be camping this next weekend at a location with minimal amount of trees. I know it is possible to hang two hammocks from the same set of trees like bunk beds but I have never tried this yet. Any tips from those that have used this setup?

Don't sleep in the lower hammock is my advice - or at least put the lighter person in the upper hammock.

If you find three trees, it might be easier to put two hammocks under one tarp that way - less dangerous.

Consider the enevitable 'bathroom' break at 2am. Wouldn't it suck to be the guy on top who had to somehow clammer down over the guy on bottom to take a leak in the middle of the night. Not worth it man. Pain in the A**.

You would be much more satisfied if you chose three trees to hang from, in a triangle setup. As in one tree for both your foot ends, and two separate but close trees for your head ends.

    3-trees??

My son and I managed to hang as you described between two huge live oaks. I wrapped some monster tree straps around each tree so the suspension point was on the "side" rather than the "center". His hammock was hung slightly lower than mine and I adjusted the suspensions so the two asym hammocks were offset from each other. It was like 3D Tetris but worked well. I would have a really hard time finding another setup like that. The trees were nearly 3' in diameter (old FL oaks).

The 3-tree setup described by others here would be a lot better idea. Two trees close together for the heads then maybe both feet meeting at the same tree. You might be able to rig one large tarp over both with a little bit of creative rope work.

On our first hang we setup with three trees even though we had plenty to choose from. Made for a nice setup. If I have three trees to work with will use them but might only have two. Want to avoid going to ground if at all possible.

with three kids, I hang two sets of bunk beds in a V. I always take the bottom, with my 4 year old above me, and the two other boys, 9 and 6 fight over the top bunk on the other leg of the V. Set the top set of huggers as high as you can of course, and putting the lighter person on top helps with this since they dont sag as much. Also found out that having a structural ridge line on the bottom hammock can sometimes interfere with the upper hammock. We hang this way all the time, and havent had a problem yet.

It is possible to lay side by side from the same trees. Lay with your head at one end and your son with his head at the other end. There is a thread about placing a board between the head and and foot end suspensions to seperate the hammock and keep them under one tarp.

I read about an idea where you tie both hammocks to the same trees but at the head and foot end of each you stake out a rope that pulls the hammock away from center. Would probably have to be hefty stakes or tie off to other trees or bushes. The original poster said this worked better than trying to use some sort of spreader bar to keep the hammocks apart.

Hanging one slightly higher than the other would be helpful with this approach.

I saw a video on you tube. Can't remember his name but he does a wagon wheel with one tree and some t-posts with his scouts. To through the hammock camping videos. And you'll find him..... I'll try and find it and send you the link. It's pretty creative and something to keep in mind with my boys.
