the Katy expedition/hang when we can

    When June 2-6
Where: across the state of Missouri
    How: bicycle

The Katy Trail is a 237 mile Bicycle rails to trails conversion across the state of Missouri. It follows the Lewis and Clark trail along the Missouri river. The link for more information is as follows: http://www.bikekatytrail.com/

Our current format has been to do 45-60 mile days with most of the dining at the towns along the way. In very remote sections, we do carry our cookware and food. We like to have time for “play” at camp and on the trail.

We intend to ride West to East and begin at the actual trail head in Clinton,Mo. We hope to end in Machens, the eastern terminus.

Since riders are coming from all directions it's get there best as you can--the challenge is getting to Clinton! The eastern terminus Machens you'll see is close to St.Louis and all types of transportation whereas Clinton is off the beaten track.
We plan on driving to Machens and taking Amtrak (yes they haul bikes!) to Sedalia (furthest west near the Katy that Amrack goes) then hiring a bike shuttle to get to Clinton.
However you get there the ride starts the morning of June 2.

The 50-60 mile/day pace is to allow plenty of time for exploration (wineries/breweries/Lewis & Clark history/etc (including time to find those elusive hanging spots).
We hope to hang a lot but posts on this forum lead one to believe that hanging will be a challenge-so prepare for motels/hotels/B&Bs or very creative hanging where/when possible:

In the last several months we've done the Silver Comet, the Chief Ladiga, the Creeper, the New River, the Greenbriar, and the Great Alleghany Passage. Bike camping, especially bikehammockcamping is yet another great way to explore.

    All HF members are invited!

Will see on that. Tempting for me since i bike all the time here in KC, and i always wanted to see the Katy Trail. My dad is less willing to do a 45-60 mile per day pace bc he hasn't done much biking in years. Since i am new to long distance biking (i do fairly short 20 mile round trip commutes), 50 would be close to my limit per day i think. Thanks for the formal HF invite though.
Eagels may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked through jet engines!!

Count me as a maybe, for now. I've been interested in the Katy Trail for several years and if i don't ride it earlier in the Spring, I may join in.

Here's another route to put on your radar - The Grand Illinois Trail - over 500 miles, 2/3 on rail trails and the remainder on low traffic, township roads.

I have started some training now to get more distance on these legs so that i can do a 40-60 mile a day thing without too much issues. First i am starting out without much extra weight. Any suggestions from the rest of you things i should do/concerns about this?

Done a fair amount of biking on the Katy trail. Really gorgeous, at least the eastern half (haven't done the other). Bluffs on one side and wetlands or the river on the other. If I still lived in Missouri I'd definitely come join you.

You'll want to have bug netting on your hammocks. Because of the close proximity of wetlands the mosquitos are thick. Not a problem while biking of course, just when you stop.

Registering interest here. I can do 40 to 60 mile days, particularly if there is a slight downgrade, like there appears to be here once past the first 25 miles or so.

Finances and time off from work will be the deciding factors here. Hopefully, I'll be able to put together some cash for this one...

Is it a paved or packed gravel surface? May be interested.

It's crushed limestone; it looks pretty fine.
