When June 2-6
Where: across the state of Missouri
How: bicycle
The Katy Trail is a 237 mile Bicycle rails to trails conversion across the state of Missouri. It follows the Lewis and Clark trail along the Missouri river. The link for more information is as follows: http://www.bikekatytrail.com/
Our current format has been to do 45-60 mile days with most of the dining at the towns along the way. In very remote sections, we do carry our cookware and food. We like to have time for “play” at camp and on the trail.
We intend to ride West to East and begin at the actual trail head in Clinton,Mo. We hope to end in Machens, the eastern terminus.
Since riders are coming from all directions it's get there best as you can--the challenge is getting to Clinton! The eastern terminus Machens you'll see is close to St.Louis and all types of transportation whereas Clinton is off the beaten track.
We plan on driving to Machens and taking Amtrak (yes they haul bikes!) to Sedalia (furthest west near the Katy that Amrack goes) then hiring a bike shuttle to get to Clinton.
However you get there the ride starts the morning of June 2.
The 50-60 mile/day pace is to allow plenty of time for exploration (wineries/breweries/Lewis & Clark history/etc (including time to find those elusive hanging spots).
We hope to hang a lot but posts on this forum lead one to believe that hanging will be a challenge-so prepare for motels/hotels/B&Bs or very creative hanging where/when possible:

In the last several months we've done the Silver Comet, the Chief Ladiga, the Creeper, the New River, the Greenbriar, and the Great Alleghany Passage. Bike camping, especially bikehammockcamping is yet another great way to explore.
