Add a sewn-in footbox to a GT UL?

My apologies if this is already somewhere on the site but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.....

I have a "customized" GTUL from PapaSmurf and I dig the weight. But I'm 6'1" and get knee pain from hyper-extension, and sometimes "lose" my pillow or quilt footbox due to the slightly narrower width. It's as if I need an extra foot or so in width. I use a "knee pillow" w/ some success but am wondering:

Can a sewn-in footbox be added to give a flatter lay (& maybe a "footbox" for the head end as well)?

Knotty's cool stretch sides don't appear to help the lay or I would try that. I also have a Bridge hammock and prefer its flatness, but not the weight. After all I've read I should be better @ diy, but I'm challenged!

    Thank you!

I'm also interested to see the weigh in on this one, my DIY gathered in, been strongly thinking about adding in the triangle (following with adding in a shelf, then a zippered removable bugnet that can be later changed out to a winter shelter, etc). Just to say I could do it.

Someone here on the forums did the head and foot box on their hammock. I've been trying to find that link for you to no avail.

I think that can be done.. Make a semi circle of fabric For each (head/foot) about 2 ft long in diameter, sew the flat to the hammock and add a draw cord to the hem on the curved edge that way you will be able to cinch it up... Well at least it seams to work in my head..!

I have made a couple like that but the flat side will need to be about 40" long and arc at about 12" at longest point. These are finished sizes. The nice thing about this style is that you can still enter the footbox side without damaging the hammock. The footbox does not change the lay of hammock but are nice for keeping quilts in etc

That sounds spot on! I thought of doing the foot box the other way but as you say when entering the hammock you will over stress the seams!

What about just putting shock cord through the hem like a WL owl? Or is this hammock width to narrow?

I just made one that used the footbox we have been discussing and the shock cord thru the hem on the head end. I think combining the 2 ways works best. I mentioned this in another thread and hope to get some pics soon.

I've made quite a few hammocks, and the footbox really doesn't make a flatter lay. It does, however, shorten the sides up a bit, keeping your TQ from taking a little trip...

Knotty's Stretch-side hammock mod is a great way to keep it light and is easier to do than a footbox, and has a similar effect.

re: hyper extension: Make sure the foot-end of your hammock is 6" or more higher than your head end. Your butt should be mid-span in the hammock, your CG is above your navel (unless you have matching chromosomes.)
