    $22 - 23 ounce "Tarp" (Tent footprint @Amazon)

    (My first new thread here)

I found a deal on the DD Hammock 2nds and got a 9'x9' tarp. However, I know these won't last so I thought I would share what I almost bought.

Amazon has a Kelty Yellowstone 6 footprint for $21.64. The tent this footprint was made for is 104"x104" in size, so you have a nice 8.6'x8.6' "tarp" for really cheap. It has tie-outs in 4 corners, so it is suitable for the "diamond" tarp configuration.

I am a "ground dweller" and new to hanging; I'm trying to start on the cheap until I know that hanging is for me. I suspect there are others readers here like me, or guys currently using a Poly Tarp that are looking for something lighter and affordable (perhaps waiting for more GuideGear tarps to be in stock somewhere). I hope this alternative is helpful to some of you, as these forums have been to me..

Gotta be lighter than a yard tarp, right? The diagonal on that should be around 12 feet so it would definitely cover you. If you dont mind the weight it should work great for you.

    Nice find!
    ...in it for pics.

Anyone know how waterproof this would be? I imagine as a footprint it should be but not sure. In need of a packable tarp to replace the cheap blue beast from Walmart and this price is nice. Weight is 23oz so not as light as could be.

I suspect it would not be fully waterproof, however that could be enhanced by applying a DWR or silicon spray on the outside, or applying Kenyon Recoat 3 to the underside.

    I cannot say enough about the Chinook either 9.6 x 12 or 12 x 14 tarps.

If you are looking for something cheap, relatively light, and fully functional (IMHO smaller tarps are sufficient to keep the elements out; but for me, having a place to cook, dress, etc. is necessary. A small tarp just doesn't cut it for me).

I have the 12 x 14. It is large enough to setup with "doors".

As for the footprint, if you do decide to go that route, you can search mineral spirits and silicone. warbonnetguy has a tutorial about how to waterproof non-waterproof material.
