Question What is DWR and Dowproof?

I purchased ripstop nylon for building hammocks for my family. We are going to have some extra left over and we were thinking about making under quilts with it. The more research I have done the more I see discussion of down proof and DWR fabric. What is this?

    DWR is "durable water repellent"

and downproof fabric is just that, i doesn't let down migrate through the fabric, a non downproof fabric will "leak" the down and you will lose some of it

How do I know if the fabric I purchased is down proof?

The only way to know for sure is to test it with down or with another insulation that is known to migrate through fabrics.

You can be reasonably sure if it is hard to blow through and shiny on one side. This indicates the nylon has been "calendered", a heat and roller treatment that tightens up the weave.
