If car camping lock everything in the car. If back-country decide based on numbers of people I have met along the way. I have lost most of my faith in my fellow man so usually valuables with me.
Also I never travel alone and can leave security on site with our gear.
im not to worried about people taking my stuff. backcountry trails are of no threat, and public campgrounds the sites are so close itd be hard to steal something without anyone seeing.
Maybe try to use personal alarm, as a method. For example this one https://www.amazon.com/PECHAM-Person.../dp/B078PDLRJ5. Ofcoursre you can find you alarm. So maybe this method will help you. As for me, i don't use any method to proteck my gear in the camp.
When I'm in an area that has four footed critters that raid picnic tables at night, I put a battery powered motion sensor light on the table. I don't think it defers them, but at least I can see what's making that noise outside.
