    Curious....adding water to down

I just ordered some Tyvek for my first real DIY-a pair of rain mitts...so I peruse the DIY forum admiring all the genius here and not that I'll ever attempt a down project I do look at the techniques used to instill the down into the baffles.
So I'm curious if this method would work-get the plastic packets of down from your supplier, cut open, then add water, fold the plastic over to contain while you shake and slosh. A clump will form, a solid little mass of wet down. Then simply place the glob into the baffle. After the baffles are sewn then into the dryer on tumble with the tennis balls.
    Crazy?

    Hey MedicineMan,

Sounds like it could work but I would be afraid it may take a long time to dry out properly from a wet clump of down. It would be interesting to see if it worked...maybe try it with just a small pouch of material and a small amount of down.
    Take care,

I wouldn't mess with the water, that's for sure. Insert the open end of the packet all the way into the chamber. Push the down out with a broom stick or dowel. Fold and pin the chamber shut. voila!
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

can always try to find Polyvinyl alcohol baggies. Pack the down in them and wash afterward. That is something the down suppliers might look into.

This idea come up from time to time. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. It gets soaking wet & clumps everytime you wash it, then dries out & fluffs up like normal.

I think the problem with wetting down is that it then seems to stick to everything, so it would stick to the inside of the plastic packet - I think you would find it difficult to get it all out.

I dont find working with down so difficult that I would consider going to such lengths, it just has so much potential to backfire.

"Crazy?" Certainly messy. MM, what have you been burning in your bushbuddy? There are are some very easy ways to stuff down. After a conversation with Stormcrow, I made a down syringe from a 1.5" pvc pipe, and a dowel with a leather washer on it for the plunger. Works very well with a minimum of escaped down.
