Too much down?

Is it even possible to add too much down to an under quilt? Obviously over stuffing to the point that the down is always compressed will reduce its effectiveness as an insulator. I've read strings about over stuffing uqs and wonder if there is a point of diminishing returns with down?

I have an uq I'm in the process of filling with down from comforter I acquired. It's a king size comforter going into an uq measuring 48x56. I have filled 4 of the 8 baffles and can see I'm going to have down left over... Maybe?

IMHO, if you're stuffing a 3/4-ish length UQ, from a KING comforter, you should have down left over...

Though I am only making my UQ now, more than 20% overstuffed is probably a waste...

I used right around 20oz to stuff a 60"x40" UQ with about 3.5" of loft, maybe a smidge more in the center of the baffles. To hit that magic 20% number, I probably could have used another 3oz or so.

My 20oz of 550fp down (which is probably what your comforter uses) came from a generously stuffed throw that was only about 65" square. Even if your king comforter is a little anemic, I'd think you've got plenty of down there to get something close to 4" of loft with 20% overstuff on a 3/4 length UQ (I'm thinking 40"x55" or so?)

you can overstuff upto 50%, or in other words down insulates just as good *within 1%* when compressed upto 50%

(i am recalling information from R.N. on BPL he is the insulation guru)

I use 10% and 30% for my quilts
