Need Info On Ocracoke Island park/Outerbanks

Hey guys, I need some info on Ocracoke Island Park if anyone is near it.

Mods, this isnt a planning thing, but more an info request from those who know.

In april im heading out there with some friends on a run, and I cant remember if there was ANYWHERE in the campgrounds that can support a hammock? or do i have to go to ground.

    Thanks!

Frisco Woods in Hatteras / Buxton area has plenty of trees for swinging and an excellent windsurfing launch, but it can get kind of rowdy, as with most of the OBX sites. http://www.thefriscowoodscampground.com/.
The Buxton state park campground is void of trees.
Not sure what's on Ocracoke Island.

yeah, it HAS to be on the island. Its a preplanned and paid for well in advance, and everyone is camping on the island.

    I don't think so...

I am 99.44% sure there is nothing at the NPS park but a few bushes. Been there a few times and don't recall a tree in sight. If you look on Google Earth or the like the NPS campsites are NE of town where 12 bends in a little 'S'.

We camped one Easter at a private place called Teeter's in town right near the old British cemetery... wasn't exactly serene but did have some trees.

Also, if you've never been, I highly recommend reservations for the ferry... pretty light traffic this time of year but if you get stuck on the island there aren't many places to stay. Driving the long way up/down the banks is about the same time, but many more miles.

went there 2 years ago, did the same run.

but i had a cheapo tent last year that i threw away after the thing, because I hated to carry it. the party is on the island and everything is going down there. since im not a drinker ill actually be getting sleep.

and i do have tickets for the ferry off. im taking the 7am one since everyone else will be wasted off moonshine. the way it works everyone that signs up gets a ferry ticket and a campsite.

    Rev,

I looked at Google Maps. There are some pics from users and they show a fair number of trees next to the sites. If I recall they are the scrub pines.

    Hope that helps.

Here is a link to the pic. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...2BDSC_2767.JPG

There are very few problems we can solve ourselves, but there is almost nothing we cannot solve together.

Most often when someone says they can't, they are unwilling to try.

Rev -- I'm on the Outer Banks just north of Ocracoke; have camped at Ocracoke many times.

It's possible that you might get lucky and find a place to hang in the scrub oaks, but be prepared to go to ground. It's difficult to find a scrub oak that you can hang from.

Enjoy one of my favorite islands. The Back Porch Cafe and/or Atlantic Cafe are both highly recommended ... a little more pricey than Howards Pub, but the food is worth it. (Howards Pub was closed when I went through in December ... they used to stay open year 'round so I hope its a seasonal thing they have adopted.)

BTW, technically the scrub oaks are off limits to campers but I think you may be able to get away with it. The rules say "camping at designated sites only". The only designated site with scrub oaks is site 32 (if my memory serves me right) at the northern end of the park ... and you'd be blocking a walking path to the ocean.

Been down there a lot (Little over an hour away) and as has been mentioned, most of the trees substantial enough to hang from are the low scrub trees.
