GTUL uncomfortable?

What i found to work was to lay the pad in the hammock and the bag on the ground next to the hammock, lay down in the hammock and get my pad situated right, then grab the sleeping bag and throw it over top of me and put my feet ALL THE WAY at the end of the footbox (KEY! if my feet shifted down from the end of the footbox the bag would almost drag me out of the hammock (nylon on nylon is SLICK!)) And if i got everything together right i was able to get really comfortable and most importantly stay in the hammock!.

WOW!! You are one determined hammocker!! I would have been dumped out on the ground if I tried all that!!! Shoot, I've got a hammock simular to your's that I only use for sitting around camp with because it's already dumped me out before.

Good luck to you and hopefully you'll come across a wider hammock soon. Keep a watch on here for people selling hammocks too, you can run across some really good deals.

You can also try putting the foot end of the pad INSIDE the footbox of the sleeping bag to keep it all together. People who use fraction UQ's use a piece of zrest or other pad inside the footbox to keep their feet and lower legs warm. I don't see why this wouldn't work for you as well. If your pad is 24" wide at the feet, you may want to trim it so it doesn't curl too much.

Also, how long is your pad? I have a 6' pad that flops over the foot and head end of the hammock when I'm in it. This causes one or the other end to want to slide out. Cut it down a bit if it is too long and use a pillow or hat instead of laying your head on the pad. This should help keep everything contained in the hammock.

Yeah i'm determined! I haven't gone backpacking in a few years and i'm really anxious to get back out there! Let alone really trying out hammock camping!

And I have been watching the FS fourms for a good deal on something but i'll probably end up making a DIY hammock. I like the idea of sleeping in something i made .

Thats a great idea! Right now the pad i have is cut to 3/4 length for ground camping but i was planing on getting a new pad anyway so i'll definitely need to try that.

I have the same hammock and am about the same size. I too have had my feet slip out several times a night but once I find the 'sweet spot' it sleeps very comfortable to me. If anything this hammock is a little too big and has lots of extra material on the sides. The pitch you hang your slings at has a lot to do with it too. But for the price think the GTUL is a great hang.

I much prefer the small Grand Trunk Nano and take it on all camping trips and use the Ultralight for dayhikes, naps. Goodluck!
