Happy to be an Oddball

I do a river trip each year, usually for about a week. last year the most experienced of us, met us half way with his kayak and all his gear in the hatches. hammock included. it was 100 degree weather all week along the river and he was cool and comfy, up quick in the evening and packed before the rest the next morning.

this year im getting headshakes from my fellow river trippers who aren't convinced of my system - i have no worries, even if it will be the first real trip for me - trial by fire

I would like to think that we are the more logical, thinking people! Hammocks are logically more comfortable, and bent bikes are more comfortable as well. I have a semi bent bike, that I thouroughly enjoy.

I did my first paddle as a hanger this year, and when I quickly found a site, level or otherwise, set up in under two minutes and never had to bend down and crawl through a tunnel to get to my gear, my fellow paddlers were starting to drool by the end of the trip. They just can't believe that they will be comfortable. Comments about needing a chiropracter abounded. Yet, I had great sleep, to bed earlier and up later than most and no ibuprofen the whole trip. They just shook their heads.

I think to get into hanging simply requires a willingness to try new things. To be positive and see the possibilities rather than the barriers. I like to consider myself that kind of person.

No, before the Nam years, 67-68, I took three days in 66 to climb Whitney. That was my first real backpacking trip in the wilderness.

99% agree....1 % reserved because an oddball with a gun is frightening. I only have a hockey stick to defend myself.

Let's see, we dangle ourselves between trees supported by lightweight fabric and ropes, we play with said fabric and rope in our spare time to see how we can "improve" it, we discuss fabric and rope when we aren't playing with it with people we have never met, and occasionally we go camping with strangers in our fabric and rope creations. Yep, we're oddballs. But we're cool oddballs.
