Need to dress for success

I've got a pair of Gander Mountain zip-offs that I got at Sierra Trading Post almost twenty years ago. They have held up remarkably well--I think I paid less than 20 bucks for them. I also have a pair of nylon warm-up pants that came from a thrift store for not much; they are pretty warm and I have used them around camp for a good many years. I second Shug's suggestion--try some things and see what works for you. Ask other folks when you're out there hiking. You don't have to spend a fortune or have any brand names on things to impress when you're heading for the woods.

Lots of great advice here. For pants, I like the used pair of scout pants that convert to shorts I got at the thrift store. Old Navy has polar fleece tops and bottoms, usually on clearance after the season, as well. Makes nice sleepwear and/or middle layer. Kohl's has great clearance sales as well, up to 85% off with their coupons. Bought a nice winter coat with removable insert at Kohl's for under $20 last week. Clothing is another essential part of your overall gear collection and can become an addiction. But, as another HF member says, it's only an addiction if you are trying to quit!
