    Hammock presentation

I have been asked to teach a class at our university of scouting in February on hammocks. Assuming you are new to hammocks what topics would you like to see covered? The class will be around 50 minutes.

Right now I am planning on discussing the following.

    terminology
    types of hammocks
    suspension systems
how to sleep in a hammock
cold weather / warm weather camping
    Q & A

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I will definitely be reviewing Shug's video's for some additional pointers.

    Thanks in advance.

Pros and cons of hammock vs. tent.
    Hang angle.
    Positioning in hammock.
    Site selection.

But that might be a lot to talk about in 50 minutes.

Yes, I'd say site selection (and how you have so many more choices with a hammock, no roots, rocks, bugs, etc.) and insulation, maybe types of suspension and hammock body materials. Of course bring a sample and set it up wherever you can. (Demo). Just have fun with it, good luck!

I thought that Just Jeff's Hammock Camping page was a really well-put-together presentation on the essentials. And until Dejoha's book comes out, there's still his extremely well-done illustrations here on Hammock Forums.

Obviously you are going to have a bias towards hammocks (since they rock! ) but I would avoid saying hammocks are the end all be all of sleeping solutions.
Hammocks are still the very small minority, and if you come off sounding like your opinion is the only one without admitting there are other viable options then students will just write you off as a hammock snob and not a source of knowledge.

Brilliant idea! I'm going to contact our scout district too. As hammock camping grows in popularity, especially within the scouting community, it is a great time to educate on the front end.

To Cjrenol's point, I think if you frame the discussion around this "emerging trend," recognizing that hammock camping may not be for everyone, you should be good. Basically, if you are looking at using a hammock as your shelter, here are some best practices to strive for, etc.

Audience=college educated. Need to cover its impact on Leave No Trace vs. tents and portability and weight over tents. I've gotten a few people at my college to convert and one security guard.

+1 On the benefits of hammocks compared to ground sleeping. Watch getting too technical, keep it light, fun, and positive. Lets face it, we've become so passionate about this "sport" that just talking about it can become over whelming to someone who has never run across the idea.
