Best way to lighten up a HH

I Know it adds up. I do think the tarp would save more. At 4 oz I would also be inclined to put a loop in the rope after the prussics and cut off the rest. Sounds like that would take out 3 oz without messing with the warranty or the other suspension parts.

I got curious. If you have the polyester hex fly it is 23 oz. The silnylon is 18.6. JRB will put in a Spin 9.9 oz for 149.95, catch is it is a ft shorter and 2 ft narrower. Not sure how much the size change matters but it is almost a pound off the package.

That hex tarp is HEAVY, I had one, I know :-(
Mine weighs 32 oz but I replaced it with a cuben one at 9 oz. That's a savings of lbs not just ounces.

This all ties back to the great triangle. You can have lightweight, durable, or cheap. You're not going to have all three.

I'd agree...if you can afford a cuben fiber tarp...that would indeed be a good way to lighten your system up.

If cost isn't an factor, there are lots of ways to ligten a lot of things in your pack, not just your hammock. Sleeping system, clothing, the pack itself.

I can't afford all the downy goodness, nor the cuben wonder items. So in my case, what I carry weighs more than that carried by folks with lighter pocketbooks.

Ya now cutting the line after prusics is great. But Think about this. How many times in the last twenty years have I bought a high end product, or even low end, and utilised the warrenty?? Think about it? Chain stores make millions selling extended warrentys at cash register. 99 percent never cash in or higher I bet! Put the whoopies on if a want them. Save stock ropes and tie back on in case of failure. I bet ya never have to tie back on! Live a little, take a chance, wander far from home on a secluded trail
I admit i considered just what your worry is, but gads man . We have to cut loose from corporate america! There warrentys are glue to to there products! They are also profit, nothing wrong with it but wow!
It is like gear maufacturers still tring to cram 6 pound packs down our throat, Because IT IS Gauranteed FOR LIFE!
No Thank YOU I will take my 1.2 Pound G4 and throw it away or repair myself after 5 years or so. Guess what I saved 5 pounds of untold stress on my knees and did a hike I could do! Whats cheaper a hundred dollor pack or 100,000 dollor knee surgery??????? Think About it!

I recently bought the explorer deluxe zip and haven't used it yet.
I meant to get the hex, but ended up with the regular fly.
The standard fly is 13.9 oz and the hex is 23 oz.
I would be happy to do a swap if you're interested, it's never been used.

has anybody weighed the rope? I'm curious about how much weight would really be saved moving to whoopies.

The rope weighs about 84 grams each so 168G for both sides

Yesbut. I am not knocking cuben as watching it over the last year or so seems to show it holds up over time. OTOH we have also had folks poke holes in the Mylar. Granted, it is good but it is not indestructible.
