Using camping pad in Explorer Deluxe

I formerly owned a Eureka Chrysalis and used a Cabellas self inflating pad in it for insulation. It is a 20x72x2 1/2 inch pad. Worked well in that hammock, although it is a bridge hammock

Now I am taking the hennessy and will be in the Boundary Waters. Temps in the 40's. Would you use the camping pad or go to the super shelter? I have a bottom entry hammock.

Personally I've had good success with the HHSS. I'd recommend that as probably being a lot more comfortable than trying to sleep on a camping pad inside the hammock.

I'd suggest a trial run in your backyard at those temps if you can manage it.

I used a thermarest self inflate in my Hennessy in 30 degree weather and it worked out great.

I guess it depends on how much you thrash at night. I used a pad in my Hennessy for a couple of years, but all my thrashing was to get situated on the pad. After that I had no problems.

The problem I've always had with the HHSS (and why I never bought one) is this - for $30 more you can buy a 20* underquilt.

    Big Agnes

The Big Agnes bags and mattress' work great in my HHExplorer. No sliding off the mat.

I can see that. In my case, I caught the HHSS on sale...$99 for the HHSS + overcover. So that was pad, undercover, and overcover. If I could find a 20* UQ for that price (or even $30 more) I'd go for it.

Weasel and I both picked up one at that price...one for his expedition and one for my explorer. And honestly neither of us have had any issues with it so far. We've been out as cold as 22* with 30-40 mph gusty winds.
