    Tree straps for tarp lines?

Does anyone use tree straps for your tarp ridgelines? Due to my fear of rubbing my 1.75mm Zing-it to death, I have recently been using a pair of SmokeBait's tree straps to attach my tarp ridges at my backyard setup. I feel a bit more at ease knowing the oak trees aren't cutting my Zing-it.

I really think Mule tape would be a better choice for this, but I don't have any.

I do not. The tarp is not moving enough to require straps. Once it is up, it is up. Your hammock moves every time you get in or move around and that adds stress to your suspension, and may cause damage to the tree bark, thus requiring straps. I would not worry about your zing it on your tarp.

I agree that straps may be adding weight that you do not need.

I just use a little tubular webbing slipped over the line were they go around the tree, lets the line slide and not dig into the tree.

I think zing-it is made specifically for arborists to toss high into trees and not get stuck. It's made to haul heavy climbing lines up and over high branches. So, I doubt the type of abuse it suffers wrapping around a trunk will damage it very quickly. HYOH.....

I just use a setup where my tarp is on straps (or webbing depending on which one) and my hammock attaches to that.

    Agree with this.

Your zing-it is good for hundreds and hundreds of nights with the tarp, at a minimum. No need to baby your cording.

Someone posted the idea of using aquarium tubing to protect the tree and line.
I have adopted this idea for my winter tarp where I really crank down on the Ridgelines
to support the weight from snow loads.

I have not used them enough to tell how well they work. If they don't hold up I plan to try something else.
Maybe try to find some 1/4 to 1/2" wide tree straps.

This past fall, in a Colorado National Forest campground I saw a new rule posted. "NO Cloths Lines"
A campground host may consider a tarp ridge line to be the same thing.

I really like myles advice above. Thanks man, great idea, at a low weight penalty. OutandBack as well, I got all kinds of tubing at my workplace. Thanks dudes.
I've also been thinkin about just making some dedicated tree straps from Zing-it, to attach to my tarp lines. That way it's not one entire ridgeline I have to replace if it ever wears out.
I have really abrasive water oaks in the back yard. My tarp sees regular use out there so I've got to do something.

I could see it if you were in a public camping grounds and were concerned about cranking down hard on a tree that had a soft thin bark like fruit or ornamental trees. Certainly you could accomplish a good protection with a couple short pieces of wire sheath from some CAT5 network cable to slip your ridgeline through. Most generally it's teflon.

But wearing out zing-it by abrading it on wood fiber? I'd curious to hear the over/under on how long that would take.
