    Central Wisconsin HANG April 13-15

RBDodger and I were talking and we would like to host a hang in our back yard... the Kronenwetter Forest Unit. The forest unit is in Marathon County just East (Southeast) of Wausau. I spoke to the county parks and forest folks and they are cool with the hang and I have in my hand the permit for the hang.

April 13-15 is between Scouting events, so Roger and I are both free. I am including a map of the unit. For those that want to test gear there is a good clearing about a mile in from the north parking lot, for those that want to trek the same clearing is about five miles in from the southern parking lot.

I live nearby in case we have any emergencies, there is a running strem for water. County parks asked if we make a fire ring, we clean it up after, I will take care of that.

I can scout whenever, and get a GPS link for the site if anyone needs it. Trail is crushed granite and a nice easy walk in, no real hills to speak of. There was a nice beaver pond nearby but didn't see any activity over the winter, so no guarantees on spotting beaver.

Let me know if you are interested.

Here is the map of the forest unit.
To get there, take Highway 29 East of Wausau to Highway J. take that south about 3 miles to martin Road. The parking lot is on the south side of the road and clearly marked.

This is a great place to test your gear and enjoy the sounds of the wind through the trees. During the day you can take an easy hike through the trails. We do have black bear in the area, so it will be important that you follow good food storage procedures (especially in the spring).

This is true backwoods camping, no toilets or running water. Water can be filtered from the creek near by. If you are distance hiker and want to stretch your legs, their are two other forest units that connect to this one via trails. PM me and I will give you the information.

    I'm looking forward to it.

This sounds like a fun trip and with being only 3 hours away, pretty do-able. I'll put it on the calendar and Kiba and I will try to make this one.

I used to live on Martin Rd. right across from the parking lot. I spent a lot of time running my dogs and grouse hunting back in that forest unit. It's a huge tract of land that can be very quiet and peaceful, but, it's public land open to everyone and that weekend happens to be the first or second period of the Spring Turkey Season. You may see and hear turkey hunters back in there and it would behoove everyone to wear bright clothing and to stay away from areas where you know people are turkey hunting. Every year somebody gets mistaken for a turkey (come to think of it, a few people may be properly identified as "turkeys") and gets shot.

If the creek drains out of the beaver pond, you should only drink the water if it is filtered to avoid cryptosporidium, which will make you sicker than you ever want to be.

I'm going to look at my calendar and see if I can make it.
