Cold Spots

I am confused as to what causes cold spots. Form what I gather it is the compression of your down in your sleeping bags in this case from the hammock? I tried the blue pad and didn't seen to be what was needed. Tried my ThermaRest and seemed to be better but still cold spots. I think I will try my ThermaRest with a 20" x 36" piece of blue foam under Therm at shoulders.
Am I getting closer? Just trying to understand why it all happens so when I get to setting up grandson I'm close to right on. I watched Shugs vids and for what ever reason I seem to be able to lay out my bag climb in and be pretty much situated just like being on the ground. I'm in Central CA so just talking about high 30s to mid 40s.

Where.....shoulders? Buttocks?
Double up some pads......add those shoulder wings.....

Thanks Shug. Went back and watched your vids. But am I on the right track in understanding what causes the cold spot? The foam wings as it were in the SPE replaces or becomes your insulator. To answer your question if I remember correctly it was around my hips as the therma pad seemed to keep all my backside ok.

You're on the right track.

It's because the hammock spreads your weight over a greater area than sleeping on the ground (hence the good night's sleep they help with). This means that areas that are covered by a standard width pad on the ground aren't in a hammock (hips and shoulders are the biggies).

The pressure points of contact in a hammock are less pronounced, but that's because there are more of them than sleeping on the ground. Instead of just your back, your sides are also in contact with a surface that will rob you of heat. So, underquilts, PeaPods, and SPEs are recommended.

Blue CCF wings added to your ThermaRest should work just fine; you just need them (the wings) wherever your body actually touches the hammock. This prevents your bag from being compressed and losing its insulative value.

Thank, I thought I understood the problem, just wanted to be sure before I traveled down the wrong path. Once I figure it out I will setup one for my Grandson. You are correct in that different forces come in to play once you leave the ground. It started when I stumbled by chance on to Shugs vid and he mentioned consistency of sleep, an hour later I had ordered a hammock.
