Warbonnett Asym vs Edge...your thoughts????

Hey everyone,

I am in the market for a couple of tarps for milder/hot weather. They will be used in conjunction with a 1.7 Dbl layer Black Birds. I have a Superfly and BigMamajamba for when the weather is colder or we know there's a chance for bad weather. Now keep in mind that I am a motorcycle hanger so weight is of little consideration to me but bulk is important.

I was originally thinking about going with an Edge and an Asym tarp to try one of each but I'm wondering if it is smarter to go with one over the other? I would still like a tarp to offer enough protection in case of an unexpected storm. The Edge offers a little more girth but isn't as long as the Asym.....whereas the asym has a longer ridge line but not the width of the Edge.

Any info would be appreciated.

The Asym provides a lot of coverage, more than one would think. But, that coverage is pretty specific; the hammock. There isn't much room under it unless you're in the hammock. The Edge is a little more forgiving in that regard. I prefer the Edge for only one reason, I don't need a full ridgeline to hang it crisply. The Asym is a bit floppy when hung without a full ridgeline. I'd like to see a seam on the Asym along the ridge so I could get a crisper hang from it. That's my single gripe about the Asym. Bulk wise, the Asym is going to save a wee bit of space vs the Edge, but not a ton.

I think if you already have a Super Fly and BMJ you would be fine with the Asym. If it was your only tarp I would reconsider. It is going to be a lot smaller, though!

BTW weather in East TN is anything but predictable, might be different in West TN.

I got the Asym. Because, I do a lot of one night hangs in good weather. And it is very light 7 oz. in stuff sack with ridge line & tie outs. (Disclaimer on my scale)

I have both. The Asym tarp will be a very bad choice on a rainy day, were as the Edge will keep you dry and allow you a bit of freedom under the tarp.
Go with the Edge.

Wow...im not trying to hijack your thread but I just asked the exact same question under the Warbonnet category. The only difference is I need one for kayak trips in summer in Central Florida. Afternoon thunderstorms everyday... 23 views and no replies yet.
My gut tells me the Edge will suit my needs best as well. I have the Enos Pro tarp now, very similar to the Edge, and it has performed well when windy and rainy. The last guy to reply is exactly correct, it will protect a much larger area under your hammock, like shoes and pack.
