    Blue pad mods...

For those of you that have made any modifications or cuts in a blue pad, will a cut continue to travel farther than your original cut with use?

I realize trimming or cutting an edge wouldn’t matter much, but has anyone made any straight cuts into the foam, and will they stay put, or continue to creep across the pad?

What if they were burned or melted? Would that seal a cut similar to melting the end of rope or cord to keep the end from fraying?

Any input on this would be a help. I have an idea, but won’t post anything until after I see what kind of results I get.

I cut my blue pad of happiness a lot. It is now a torso pad. I made a donut sit pad out of it when I bruised my tailbone. I also tore pieces off for it to work better with a gear skin and some other random stuff. The cuts I made did seem to travel and get bigger.

I have burnt it accidentally from fire sparks. It does melt nicely. I couldn't say how that would affect it, but it is a good idea. Please share your final project.

Not speaking from foam experience, but I do know that with other materials, if you end your cut with a round hole, you will have fewer problems with running.

I made some shoulder pads out of blue pad. after I cut it I used a heat gun to melt the edges. It worked real well. It put a radius on the corners and firmed up the cut edges. Made a tough skin on it.

I have a couple of pads that have multiple cuts to allow me to inter lace the 2 together making one wide pad (This pad makes the wings of the full length pad above it). I have not had any problems with the cuts getting any larger. Seems to me the only way the cut would continue to spread is if it was under some kind of stress.

I tried to attach a picture so that you could see the cuts I am talking about but I can't get it to work.

Thanks. If you can post them, great. I’m going to go forward with my plan, but was wondering if anyone had experienced problems with these kinds of cuts. I don’t camp/hike that often anyway, so the pad won’t be getting a lot of use anyway.

If you look at my images you can see a drawing of my pad set up. It allows me to have a winged pad that is douple layer from my shoulders to about mid thigh. Just remember in the drawing the blue pads would be inter laced so that they would stay together, Then a pad is lying on top giving me the full length coverage I need. Like I said before I have had no problems with the cuts but I have only slept with this set up about 10 times now.
