I put velcro on mine and I will change it as soon as I have the time. Never stays closed and catches on my socks. I might sew it closed, but first I'll sew little ties on the sides. Knot it shut to see if I ever really open it. If not, I'll sew it for the next trip.
It's better to be lucky, than good!

Never like having covers tight around my feet in a bed and wasn't sure about the sewn footbox. My current TQ system is 3 sererate layers, fleece, quilt and windbreaker with sleeving sewn footboxes. They were made 18" square which allows plenty of room for my feet without feeling cramped. The boxes are 18" deep which keeps the TQ on me and in the hammock while still being able to add or remove layers as temps dictate. I use a similar system in my house hammock with fleece and sheet layers.

my TQ can become an UQ, because the foot box can be opened out.
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)

I have mine sewn that way my feet stay warm. I can't wear socks and sleep hardly at all. So with it seen all I need to do to cool off is pull my foot out. When I'm cold it goes back in easy enough.

Thanks for all the good feedback. The main points I got were:
    1. Velcro is a bad idea for a closure.
    2. Going flat is not the only reason for cinched, there is venting too.
    3. Sewn is warmer (obviously this could be mitigated with excellent design)
    4. Some folks would go sewn if they had a do-over, didn't hear the reverse.

I am not likely to use a TQ flat, I sleep in a hammock at home. This is a summer quilt being able to get my feet out sounds like a plus. Worth a little extra bother but not much.

Right now I'm thinking a rather shallow foot box is probably the way I'll go but the gears are turning... Thanks again. I post some picks when I finish.

I have thought the same thing for my DIY Summer TQ.
