Light weight was definitely a big advantage I had - his gear was way heavier. He's going to rethink the set up and the next test we're going to do will be more ambitious. One week on the La Cloche Silhouette trail in Killarney Park.

A storm front came in that night dumping 6 inches of snow on top of the freezing rain we had experienced earlier in the evening. The temperatures plummeted. Worst part was the howling winds. It was like a freight train was coming through every time the winds decided to pipe up.

I was definitely chilled and I was expecting at any point my tarp to be blown away.

His main issue and failure point came around 6AM when his cold feet became unbearable. His handmade deerskin mocassins had leaked earlier in the evening causing his feet to get wet. There was no way to dry them out and recover warmth. His next project will be seal skin mocassins. We bailed at about 6:30AM. Everything was covered in snow and underneath that was a quarter inch of ice. The ice affected me more than him - all my knots were locked in an ice sheath.

In hindsight his set up had more romance in it. My set up was very functional but not quite as social. I didn't touch any of my "camping food" - his was so much better. Preserves and natural bacon, home made bread, thick home made smoky maple syrup. Though I'd be leery with his food set up on a bigger trip in bear country. Too much bacon grease and food smells everywhere.

I like the lean-to wool and fire approach. There are still lots of folks doing it and they don't consider it re-enactment. Lots of ways to have fun and connect in the bush.
