What do you use as stakes in the snow?

What do you use to stake down your tarp in the snow? Zpacks carries the Vargo Outdoors "Ascent" Titanium Snow Stakes http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/stakes.shtml Do they really work...either as a stake or snow anchor?

I grab a few sticks, digg a little hole, wrap the line around the stick, put it in the hole, burry. I use a stick about a foot long and inch diameter. Same concept as a snow anchor

If the snow is thin, you're just going to dig down to the dirt and use any normal stake.
But in deep snow, assuming you are in a forest, I bury a stick, about 2" diameter, horizontally in the snow, oriented perpendicular to the tie-out. After you bury it, stomp on the area and give is a half hour to consolidate before putting a load on it.

If no sticks are available and the snow is heavy, you can use a 1 foot square of silnylon for a snow anchor. Just fill it with snow, bury it, stomp it and wait for it to consolidate.

Just make sure that when you wrap your tie-out around the buried stick to leave a loop big enough to tie your knot above the snow. In the morning, you untie your knot, pull the string out and do not need to worry about digging up the stick.

I use aluminum snow stakes buried horizontally. I tighten the lines with prusik knots at the tarp end of the line. If the snow isn't deep enough to bury I try to pound the stakes into the ground but it's not always real easy doing that when the ground is frozen solid.

As mentioned above, silnylon rock/snow bags work well. Here's some DIY ones I frequently use. I always carry at least two with me.

    Polar bear poop.
    Holds like super glue.
Guylines smell a little, come springtime.

Berm up some snow, pack a stick in the now formed berm, scoop out a small area in the middle of the stick to allow easy access to tie off to.

You gotta dig out the high dollar snow anchors. The stick, you just leave it.

Same principle works well in loose beach sand. Dig a hole and bury the stick down 6-8 inches, pack the sand over the stick.
