In reply to my good friend RBDodger...don't hate the pretty...I do skin down to almost nothing. the good Lord blessed me with extra gut ... that emits it's own heat. Last weekend it was down to 10* and I had to take off everything but my long john bottoms, and then I vented in the middle of the night. I typically put my clothes in the bottom of my long bag, in case I do get chilly or need the 3:00 am coffee release.

RB on the other hand looks like Nanook of the North when he climbs in the rack, he has a hood and mittens and down booties.

So I say try it. Try changing clothes, and not changing clothes. I train my boy scouts to change clothes before bed especially in winter, because they romp in the snow and get wet...and wet is bad. But for grown folks, I think between me and my best trail buddy you have two ends of the spectrum...you are probably gonna be somewhere in the middle.

    See you on the trail.

There are 15 miles in NH I missed, and I haven't been back to hike them yet. It is a logistically awkward little chunk, but I'll get back to hike them someday.

In bear country I always bring sleep clothes. However, lately I haven't been hiking/camping in bear country. I tend to just change socks before bed then fall asleep in what I'm wearing.

I think its a good idea to have a pair of clean, dry clothes to sleep in. For one thing, A clean dry pair of socks and underwear can make you feel like a new person sometimes. Also, Especially if your going to be out for several days, its important to let your body dry out from time to time. The best time to do that is at night because you'll probably be sweaing during the day. You cant dry out if youre wearing that days sweaty clothes. If nothing else, bring some extra socks; thats the most impotant thing to keep clean and dry.

For Winter camping, I change. Other times, maybe my tee shirt or socks depending on how much I've been perspiring.

I've never had a bear come into my camp that I could tell. I've just recently started using sleep clothes. Is it a common problem for bears to come sniff your funk?

    generally

I prefer to change into something clean no matter the season, car camping, or backpacking or even at home when I am camping in the living room while family visits.

I'm more concerned about food getting on my sleeping clothes. It's nice to have sleeping clothes you are positive have had no contact with comestibles. Bear is gonna follow his nose, and if you're sleeping in your hiking pants that have been slimed in Spam juice, you're a bear taco.

I don't think bears are attracted to body odor, but I could be wrong!

Bear populations are rising in the Northeast - which I think is good for the environment and just plain good in general. I have never had a bear in my camp, but I am re-evaluating how I deal with the possibility. I think I'm gonna move to the model of: don't cook and eat where you sleep, and don't store your food (bear bag) anywhere near where you sleep. And I might even put my hiking/eating clothes in the bear bag.
