Lots of great replys,,,I think we all want less funk in the bed gear,,as well as less attracting the critters at nite, as there are more critters getting humanized every year. Even the ultraliteers will change clothes for nite and that is the same I do depending on the conditions of the elements that I feel I will be in depending on the time of year, and where I am hiking. Worst I ever endured was 3 weeks of jungle in Vietnam without being able to wash or change clothes,,that was when we all developed a sevear case of jungle rot on the clothes and skin. It only pays to stay as clean as you can even if you dip a sweat rag or hanky in the stream to wipe off before sleeping. And,,your sweat, and funk will attract alot more mosquitoes too.

FWIW I see the issue as overnight or two one can carry s a couple of changes of underwear and sleep clothes. Anything longer than 2 nights and it's very easy to get into a pattern of washing socks and underwear as soon as camp is set up and a fire going to get hot water. With 3 sets you can wear one, have a clean set and a dirty/drying set. That way you always have clean/dry available. If a wash does not dry in the evening it can be hung off your pack in the daytime. If it rains you have the third set. Do a rest day or short day every third or fourth day and wash most outer clothes and sleep clothes. That's why things like polypro make a good sleep layer with a pair of running shorts if needed sitting around camp. They also dry fast. ;-)
Wether ultralight backpacking or motorcycle camping the best habit l picked up 2 years ago was taking a separate set of clothes for sleeping.
The benefits are too many to mention..

I'm a fan of changing at night if I've done anything that has caused me to sweat at all. And during a NC summer, breathing can cause you to sweat. I like to wipe off with a wet wipe and put on a "fresh" set of non-funkified clothing before settling down to sleep.
I'm not an expert, but I can tell you what works for me. I went on a hang in December where temps dipped to around 15 degrees with high winds. This was my first hang so I wasn't sure what to do. So I striped down to my base layer, but was too warm. So I stripped down to my undies and no socks. (believe it or not socks slow circulation and can make your feet feel colder).so from then on I sleep as naked as I can and trust my top quilt and under quilt to keep me warm.
