I had a good laugh at that. Imagine the surprise they would have. I've traveled all over with my hammock, biners, rope and toggles in a carry on. Worst i've had are a few questions of puzzlement. "that *points* is a hammock?! why...." me-"well...why not?" TSA x-ray tech-"good point"
The main reason i carry all that on board is I fly non-rev alot and routinely get bumped for HOURS and on one occasion almost a day of being stuck in the airport. Nice way to take a nap if you can find a place to hang inside or outside and security doesn't hassle you.
I attempted to set mine up in ATL at a closed down terminal but the pillars are about 5 feet across...way too big for my straps. Needless to say i had golf cart patorl on me in 10 seconds, they asked what and why and agreed it would beat sleeping on the ground or a chair. They had no problem with it AND said they would go get one from REI.
