they have started to charge for backcountry permits $4 per night per person, Still cheaper than most NP's . Also I have hung at the regular campsites of Cosby, Smokemont, And Cades Cove with no hassles !
I have Hung in Elkmont and Smokemont no problems. Have a wonderful time!
I'm going to be at elkmont campground in May. I will scope out which sites are hammock friendly and report back. I know I have hung in the G loop. I believe it was G 11 and G4. Both are on the creek and next to the bathrooms.
I took a guess with this site. Cades Coves C36 Thoughts?
This was about 4-5 years ago, but we’ve hanged a couple of hammocks then at the Great Smokey Mountains. No problem. I don’t think there’d be any problem now.

I live at the entrance of the GSMNP and camp both in the campgrounds and back country. In the camp grounds you will not find any problem for trees however the back sites usually have more in the camp sites. However, you can move around and they do not have a problem. Regarding the back country they do not want hammocks hung in the shelters but would like for you to camp by a shelter. Note: they will have bear activity notices at the ranger stations and usually they will have you in a shelter with the fence door if noted. Mt Lecont has a shelter like this and usually highly recommended since there is a high bear activity. However, have a great hang and do not forget to hang your food.
If your car camping,,or looking for a jump off spot..for a little drive,,,Balsam Mt. Campground in the Smokies has several spots with trees for car camping at..and in the summer,,your at 5200' altitude. ( very cool weather camping at nite in the summer) also a lot of their campsites can be hung at with using a portable hammock stand if you have one. This campgrounds has no advanced reservations but even on the holidays, when me and the wife has been passing thru..we have had no problems in finding a spot up high and cool. In my opinion,,its the absolute best out of the way campsite that gets little attention and my fav. Location is above Cherokee, NC on south side of the park. Get there as early as you can for the best spots..No. #11 is my fav. with trees for 2 hammocks set in a triangle. (3 big trees)
