    Webbing strength

I have some yellow webbing, I think about 50’, and I’m wondering how to tell if there’s a way to tell if it’s climbing strength so I can use it for hammock suspension. I can post pics if anybody needs to see it…

If it IS… what stitch(s) would I use to sew it? I do have a thread injector and I’m thinking this may be a good first sewing project.

Thanks for any and all help!

Hey Red, any idea where it came from? How wide/thick is it? It might be hard to determine its rating from a picture. You could sew up some loops and give it a try (from a low height) and see if it stretches. Use a series of bar tacks, 4-6, or sew a double x-box and see.

Clip it to a stout tree branch, grab it, and start swinging around. If it holds doing that, move on to the hammock. In all likelihood, it will be plenty strong. This issue will be stretch. If it's nylon, it's gonna stretch. As SmokeBait said, a few bar tacks and you're good to go.

It’s 1” wide and I got it from REI maybe 6mo ago… I went in to REI planning on making tree straps because I hated the eno slap-straps but I didn’t think to ask for climbing rated.
I know what the Xbox pattern looks like (just gotta figure out how to sew it), but what are bar tacks? My JCPenny TI has the diagram but no corresponding words or manual to tell me what they are (terms). Are the bar tacks looking like this ==== or ———— or neither?

From what I've seen at REI (and confirmed online), the only climbing rated webbing they have it tubular, and it is nylon.

    http://www.rei.com/product/783605/1-...ubular-webbing

They also offer flat webbing, but it seems to be either nylon or really light polyester webbing that is not climbing rated and was listed as being for backpack straps.

The nylon will stretch, even the tubular, and I wouldn't try the really light polyester stuff. It will also stretch. 1500 lb breaking strength and up is recommended.

But if you have it, really the only way to tell is to hang from it. Might as well chop it into pieces and make some straps and test it gingerly!

p.s. Bar tacks can be sewn with a home sewing machine by doing a tight zigzag back and forth.

If it's from REI then you can be 99% positive it climbing rated NYLON---AKA same stretch you wanted to avoid in the slap straps.

    ****! Okay…
I’ll try somewhere else to buy some better non stretchy webbing.

@CornCob TY for the sewing link!

Polyester Ratchet Straps purchased from any big box store will work for tree straps. Also you can order from 1 inch polyester straps from Strapworks by the foot. A good price for peace of mind that you have the right thing.
