Anyone familiar with this kind of fabric? Is this strong enough to hold an average person? Looks and feels like nylon taffeta and somewhat silk-like. I can get it for $0.25 per yard and some good stealth colors to choose from.

I'm not asleep... but that doesn't mean I'm awake.
At that price buy it and try it. Start with a double layer. If you tie the ends you can test it without sewing.
For that price I would buy some just to test out the strength.
Heck at that price I'd not only get enough for a hammock but a hammock sock too. If you don't mind sharing, who carries it for that price?
I had an opportunity for some cheap acetate fabric recently, but after reading about the material opted out. It's positives seem to be softness, breathable, and great color selection. The negative is the fibers are very weak, poor abrasion resistance, loses strength when wet, and must be dry-cleaned only.
I have no real-world experience with the fabric, but at the prices you're getting I'd be tempted to get enough to a quick gathered-end hammock just for testing it's strength and durability.
These Acetate fabrics are being sold outside and along the sidewalks in a street strips of fabric shops here in downtown Manila. I think they're overstocks/factory seconds. Not all these sidewalk vendors pays rent and taxes, probably why they sell it cheap. I was able to grab some 10yards of polyester taffeta for $0.50/yard along the sidewalks too.

It sounds like something I tried once. It is used for lining material in suits, etc. Do not bother trying. It was the only material I got off the bargain table that just outright failed! Made a Speer type hammock, sat down and kept going! It split right across the middle of the hammock.
