I don't know how much force is being put on a hammock ridgeline. I am wondering what kind of a clip or biner you can use to disconect and reconect a ridgeline. I know Dutch has a clip for ridgelines but would something different work? What about an sbiner or the micro carabiners that AHE sells? Would they completely rip appart?

If your hammock is hung correctly there is little to no force on the RL. That said one can not always find the two perfect trees and then the RL comes into play holding the hammock at the proper sag. It could have as much force on it as your hammock suspension. SO I would error on the safe side and get something rated for at least 250#

I have mine connected with a soft shackle prusik I made from the 1.9mm tech line from DIYGS... my butt hasn't hit the ground yet

In this old thread, AngrySparrow speculates that ridgeline components should be capable of 300#.

I should stop quoting this until I can find proof, but I've heard Hennessy uses 500# rated line for their SRLs.

you know what maybe I am having a noob moment here.

I am wanting to put a ridge line on my hammock to give it a bit more sag. I am not planning on pulling the rig tight and horizontal. I plan on leaving the 30 degree or so sag in the suspension. I'm not sure I have my terminology right. Is what I am describing still called a structrual ridgeline?

I could see how if you were pulling the suspension nigh horizontal that you would
certainly need a strong connector. But what about with my situation, just wanting to put a touch more sag and a place to hook gear on my hammock? would I still need the same kind of load bearing?

The issue can still arise when you attempt to make a ridge non-structural. I tried in a previous incarnation of my hammock to make the ridge-line pop off if I tried putting pressure on it (used a mitten hook). Turns out that even when I didn't think I was stressing it at all it would pop off. So I tried other devices finally settling on a soft shackle prussic which could handle the load without adding any weight worth measuring. I recently replaced it with one of Dutch's clips which weight 2 grams and are rated to 300 pounds.

So you may think you are not putting a lot of pressure on your ridge, but it can surprise how much you can without meaning to.

Someone do up a quick graph of ridge-line tension against the difference in angles of the rope and the hammock body. (0 tension when there is no difference.....duh.. a function of the tangent of the difference?)

Easy enough to allow some safety factor on that.

But mostly you must allow the possibility of "the buddy you lend the hmmk to" doing pull ups from a prone position from the ridge-line.

Even if that friend doesn't exist, ISTM, extra suspension cordage is good to have on hand, and the non-essential ridge-line is a place to store it at small weight-penalty.
