    New to sewing

Just got a new sewing machine and enough 30D sil nylon to make my XL hex tarp. I have never even touched a sewing machine before. Can someone point me in the right direction to get started? Thanks in advance.

Start on a few small projects.
A ridgleline organizer, a stuff sack, etc.
Learn the workings of your machine and how different fabrics work (or don't).
Practice with materials you will be using.
Once you get the basics mastered, give the tarp a try.

There are some videos in our video collection here on the forum. Or give youtube a look.
Find a family member or neighbor who sew, have them give you a few lessons on what the basics are.

Your patience will soon be tested..lol
    Good Luck!

very good advice. The videos are good. Check out RamblinRev video series. And as you've already done, ask questions here for friendly advice. And lots of luck to you!

Thanks guys. Looks like my eve will consist of you tube, Daytona 500, beer and a sewing machine. (Never thought I'd ever put those things together!)

I was anxious to jump into sewing, and I worked backwards. First, I made a topquilt, then a hammock, and then a couple of stuff sacks. Needless to say, the stuffsacks are nearly perfect, while there are flaws in the others. I wish I would have been patient and started small...work with something that you can toss out first. Stuff sack is my suggestion!

Thanks for the advice folks. After switching from poly to nylon thread I am having an easier time of things. I've been sewing test patterns with some scraps and now have got 1/2 of my hex tarp done.

Well you "jumped right in" and that shows your enthusiasm. You will probably find out that even though you got your tarp done, your sewing will get better and easier the more projects you do. Sometimes i wish i could do my first major project again. It probably wouldn't be any better, but it sure would look a lot better!

    Welcome to the DIY world.

I would recommend starting with this instructional series by Ramblinrev. His step by step covers a lot of the basics.

Not a video, but a good beginners sewing manual with all the basic stuff. Carries over from old machines to the very latest. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=48422
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."
