All good advice in the references above. But the next step is to jump in and start doing it!

+1 for the OJT. You will learn more by using your machine than anything else.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Videos can be great but for me there's nothing like being taught in person. I would find a church that has a sewing group. You'll have little old ladies fawning over you showing you everything you ever wanted to know about sewing. You might even have pie's & other assorted desert's to go along with your learning!

After I got my machine, I took a 3 hour "Get to Know Your Machine" class at the local Hancock Fabrics. Best $35 I ever spent. Came out with lots of confidence and ability.

Well, first off I would like to thank every one of you for your insight and advise. Everything came out great and I actually made 2 of them (one for a buddy). We hiked a few days on the AT and I thought I would share the final product pictures

Nice job on the tarps. I completed a hammock, next is a IX UQ and then a tarp.
