The problems with Spinn go back to the fabric manufacturer. The particular spinnaker fabric that is used for tarps is a little different than silnylon in that not only is it polyester based instead of nylon, but the waterproof aspect comes from a PU coating on the surface rather than silicone impregnation. That's part of why it was _more_ waterproof than Sil. The quality of the PU coating was inconsistent, as stated by several manufacturers, so they stopped using it.

It's worth noting that different vendors source their fabrics from varying supply chains, though. JRB may very well have sourced theirs before the issues, or from batches without any issue.

JRB is a long-running quality business that backs up their products. I wouldn't be concerned.

I still think spinn is one of the best all round fabric choices for waterproofness vs weight vs price.
I think that when the lies are all told and forgot the truth will be there yet. It dont move about from place to place and it dont change from time to time. You cant corrupt it any more than you can salt salt. - Cormac McCarthy

I can tell you that mine doesn't leak. If there was a problem JRB would't sell them. I think there was 1 bad batch of spinn that went to another vender. It would be a shame to taint all spinn tarps.

Spinnaker isn't tarp material. We in the hiking community have commandeered it from sailors to use as tarps. Sailors don't need sails to be as waterproof as our tarps. However, some Spinnaker cloth is manufactured with a thick enough coating to make it waterproof enough for a tarp. In the past, this was easier to find than it is now. Hence, many tarp makers have thrown in the towel on Spinnaker because bad batches were becoming a big hassle for them. However, rest assured that JRB, being the top notch company they are, is selling only the good Spinnaker tarps. And I agree that Spinnaker is the best compromise among function, weight, and price for tarps.

Got it in. Looks great. It is a little loud when handling it. My wife came in the room and was like "what is going on in here?" I was putting the tarp up. haha
