Sorry, my wrong use of the term "sock." What I meant was the peapod type all-enclosing insulating quilt, like an oversized sleeping bag with a port at the foot for the suspension. I grant that even with that it would be possible to roll up an unused bugnet to keep it out of the way but I don't like "working around" unused gear---in an emergency situation a hindrance that is normally trivial can become critical, and when something like hypothermia is beginning to take over, small tasks become big ones. That's one of the reasons I'm leaning away from both zipper and velcro.

Use zippers. Don't even think about velcro. I just received my JRB BM Bridge hammock, and I love everything about it EXCEPT for the omni tape bug net. As soon as I get it figured out, the velcro will be ripped off of that thing with all haste, and replaced with zippers.

    Omni-tape is maddening.

If I play this right I can add the zipper with a contrasting thread, try it out, and if I don't like it I can remove it and still have the velcro intact.
You needn't cut it out then add a zipper. The easy way to add a zipper is simply to lay the bugnet out flat, mark where you want the zipper to be and sew each side with one seam each, then cut the bugnet right in the middle, right over the actual zipper. Unzip it and fold a hem under and sew it again going through the doubled over bugnet fabric and the zipper will be, or at least seem to be perfect. Mule
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.
