This will work, I have used it before with a bed sheet, you must make sure you cinch the knot down tight and leave several inches extra material to make sure it doesn't slip through the knot. You would still be better off with a channel, so don't hang any higher than your willing to fall.

The old sheet bend... that is a very sound knot so seems reasonable, but I don't think I could sleep for constantly wondering if it was slipping. Maybe you could tie a stopper knot in the fabric?

    Good luck and be safe!

The idea is sound but don't tie the knot as shown in the video. He used the weak form of a sheet bend. The mistake was made when he brought the rope end thru the material and went around the long side of the material rather than the short.

Also, the Amsteel which whoopie slings are usually made from is very slippery so a double sheet bend would be a good idea.

The other option is to take a short piece of cord (paracord, shoelace, etc.) and whip the end...

But the sheet bend should work... Just check it each time you hang...

I am new to this, however this is exactly how i made my hamock. i used 3yds of ripstop nylon and a climbing sling. I bought the material put on that same video and tied it up. I have slept in it maybe ten times the knot has never failed or sliped in the slightest. my set up only weighs 15oz. but what do i know I am just a noob!

Very nice. If you want an upgrade, grab 4 yards... longer hammocks are very very comfortable!

I use a double sheet bend on all my hammocks, and it's never shown any signs of failing or slipping on me.
I put a small eye in the end of my whoopie slings and instead of just having a tail, I run the standing line through the eye. I'll upload a picture/diagram next chance I get.

Often the weak form of a knot will work, but why use it when it's just as easy to tie it the regular way? Good practices keep you from making mistakes that you might not foresee.
