Ounces worth the comfort?

That stated, I've been using a GT UL all winter that I have down to 10.55 oz with whoopies. I'd been eyeing a BB in place of my DJ for summer outings and came across a SL 1.7 (20.5 oz). I liked it so much I picked up a DL 1.1 (24 oz) the next week!

All those weights are with whoopies and without my Dutch Buckle huggers, so it is consistant.

Anyway, I'm not a gram weenie, but I'm looking at a 10 - 14 oz swing there. I'm willing to take that for the comfort I've received from the BB. However, if I can get similar comfort out of the Traveler for winter use I'm looking at a difference of 6 - 9 over my current winter setup. I certainly don't need the netting in the winter.

Question is, how much a difference does that footbox make and is it worth the roughly 4 oz?

I've actuall "downgraded" to the traveler with a bug sock which is 12.5 oz

I find very little difference in comfort between the Blackbird and the Traveler. The Blackbird is a more 'convenient' hammock, but the Traveler is near its equal in comfort. IMO anyway.

I'm with you in terms of no bug needed in the winter. As both Raul and Cannibal have said, I too have moved to a Traveler in the winter (or my DIY!).

Anyone have a 1.1 Traveler single with whoopies? I'd like to know the weight of it if you know.

Thinking about going to a Eno single but I think the crinkle taffetta is 2.1oz sq/y(?) could lose half the hammock weight possibly going to a 1.1 but I'm not sure how the dimensions offset the weight savings.

Don't completely discount the value of netting in the cold. A simple test will prove it to you. Next time it's good and cold out, set-up a netted hammock for the night. When you wake at some point, unzip the netting and stick your hand outside of the hammock. I'll bet you a quality beer that it's colder outside of the hammock.

I actually take a hammock with integrated netting when I'm going on very cold trips. That would likely change if I was a pod, or sock user. But, since I'm not, I roll with netting in the real cold.

I'll have to give you that on the netting. Not sure exactly how much it gives you, but I hang a digital thermometer on my ridge line and a silnylon tarp usually makes it about 2 F warmer inside the canopy due to body heat at temps around freezing.

I don't like the travel style netting either.

I will admit, after camping with Just Jeff a few times now, I am starting to see the value in socks. Still not going to get one; it's a "principal" thing.
