I have an idea for a hammock design that I would like to try out. In order for the design to work, the suspension needs to attach to the corners of the ripstop, much like that of a tarp corner.
Here are some pics to give you an idea of what I am looking at doing.
My question - How many layers of fabric/straps are needed to provide the proper support so that the stress of laying in the hammock does not rip apart?

I'm not sure. The advantage of the gathered end/channel end designs is that the force is spread across the entire hammock body. Yours would concentrate it over a much smaller area, which I'm sure you know.
Something to consider, though, when cutting your fabric for this design is that the force on most hammocks goes with the weave of the fabric, reducing stretch. Pretty much any fabric will stretch if you pull on the diagonal from the weave, so you might run into some problems there.
