Trying to make whoopies, couple questions

First time splicing in a little while; I'm making whoopie slings out of 7/64 amsteel, and I'm not entirely sure on a couple little things. Been searching for half an hour or so, figured it was about time to tap the collective wisdom of the forums

    1) Is it necessary to stitch the buries in place? I have neither needle nor appropriate thread for that, so it'd be nice if I could avoid that somehow.

    2) How close together should I start the two buries? I set them 12 inches apart on my first attempt, but I feel like putting them as close together as possible would give me a little more flexibility as far as hanging options (up to 12" shorter hang distance).

    Thanks!

    1) I assume you're referring to the fixed eye bury. If you use a locked brummel to make the fixed eye, it does not need stitched. If you just used a simple bury to form the eye, it would be better to stitch it. A strand pulled from the amsteel, dental floss, etc. can be used as thread. It's only function is to keep the bury from slipping when it is not under load.

    2) Again, I'm assuming you're referring to the fixed eye bury and the adjustable bury. You are correct in your thinking that shorter spacing shortens the overall minimum length. I usually leave a ~2" space.

The weak point of the whoopie slings is the part where the adjustable portion exits. Sudden changes in diametre can also be a source of weakness so be sure you taper the fixed eye bury. As gmcttr mentioned, a couple of inches between the two is a reasonable distance.

If you are talking about the distance between the locked Brummel and the whoopie bury, then no more than 2" is good, if you are talking about the actual bury length of the whoopie, then about 10" will work.
