    Smile Wet Weather Hiking question

    Here is the scenario:
While sleeping in your hammock under you tarp it starts raining and doesn't stop all the next day. While hopefully you and hammock are staying dry. What do most of you do? Take a zero and wait out the rain just to dry off your tarp or stuff the soaked tarp and tree hugger's into the stuff sack and trek on in your rain gear to your next camp spot?
    Thanks for any Helpful suggestions!

Depends on the objective of your trip. If you need to travel a certain mileage per day, carrying on is probably the thing to do. If you are out to do something specific like photography of bushcraft, then waiting it out makes sense.

    It Depends

Since I've only section hiked I've never been on a trip where I could actually take a zero day. I've always got family/work to get back to and a limited time frame to do it in. Either that or I've carpooled with another hiker so I'm on their time table.

So, you just suck it up and put on your raingear, pack up, and go. If you're careful you can take down all your insulation and hammock while staying dry under your tarp. If the tree straps are pretty soaked then maybe those can go in an outside pack pocket. Everything else is in the pack and the cover is on . You quickly take down the tarp and cram it back in the stuff sack, skins, or whatever method you use. Cram it in the outside pocket and get to hiking.

It didn't rain on my Big Cypress hike in January but every day the tarp was soaked in the morning with dew. Everyone's tents were the same way and I was amazed how much time everyone wasted trying to dry off their gear before packing it away. I gave my tarp a good shake then packed it in my outside shovel pocket. Yes, it was wet when I got to the next camp but dry by sundown. Not really a problem just a few extra ounces of water weight.

I go whether wet or dry,,been wet myself a few times..take care to pack stuff away,,but with OHM 2.0,,I love the outside stretchy big pocket on the outside as that is where I will pack wet tarp and other stuff to air out..can't wait to use it.

Really does depend on my goal for the day. If I have nowhere to be by a particular time then I'll lazy away the day mostly napping and snacking as the rain makes that delightful sound on my tarp.

If I must go then I'll pack everything up while under the tarp and then tube up my tarp and place it along with my tree straps in the outside mesh pocket. And by the time I'm on the trail and drenched the rain usually stops.

When I'm out I hike. Unless it's really bad out I pack up and move on to my next location knowing it will take me a bit longer due to the inclement weather.

My tarp is kept on the outside of my pack no matter what and the tree straps will just be latched on the outside as well if it's still raining. Everything else essential to my survival (i.e. insulation and clothes) are in dry bags inside my pack.

Besides what's the point of bringing rain gear if I can't test it out!!!

Thanks for the great responses! I wonder if it would be worth it to carry an extra waterproof bag to stuff a wet tarp into on those rainy or wet days?

    Just keep on hiking.

I use a silnylon stuff sack. The purpose being is it keeps my stuff dry, however, it also keeps the water in, helping to keep my other things from getting wet.
I've never had a problem with water. One night it rained so bad GrizzlyAdam's Son Quantum Cat had a pond under his hammock when he woke up.
