So...Weasel and I have been hammock camping for right about a year now. Definite converts. Bought my oldest son a GT Skeeter Beeter for his birthday, and he was happy.
So, momma has been considering the concept. And while we'd considered going to the Ozark hang, things played out a little different. We went to a local booksigning Friday night with an author the whole family as read (Patricia Briggs), and planned on rolling out yesterday morning to do a hang at our secret spot...and Momma was going with.
We got out on the road, but had a bit of stress and so momma forgot a couple of things, but we made it out. I spent a good bit of time playing around trying to get her hammock setup at the right height and sag for her...lots of adjusting.
She laughed her butt off when I forgot to tie a half-hitch in the strap and gently landed on the ground in her hammock (picture pending!).
We didn't have a good UQ for her, but we had several comforters and my military CCF pad that she used. Her tarp was the little stock one off of a HH Expedition...didn't really match her pink and purple GTUL. But it did work as long as I kept it pitched close to her hammock.
It was a gorgeous trip all day yesterday. Weather was warm, clear, breezy. We got the hammocks setup, Weasel setup out of eye/earshot. Got a fire going, had pocket stews (steak, onion, sweet potato slices all in foil) for dinner, and sat around enjoying the quiet.
Got interesting at bedtime. Momma just couldn't get to sleep, couldn't quite find the sweet spot in the hammock, and it was a LOT quieter than she'd thought it would be. Took me a while to get to sleep just talking with her.
Rain came in about 3:45am. Not hard, but decent and STEADY for hours. One of her comforters got wet, and her pad kept sliding out from underneath her, but she stuck it out. She did her first overnight in some less than ideal conditions for sure. Chilly, a bit damp, and not quite getting the hammock set right. But, she did it. And...she's very willing to try it again and work with us to work the kinks outta her system for her.
So...I've got my new camping/trail mate for life. Welcome Butterfly to our ranks, please!
