    Duffel bag

I made something like a duffel bag (without straps or pockets) out of silicone nylon that fits my largest backpack when it is full. When I get to camp I take everything out of my backpack and place the pack in the bottom of the bag. Then put everything in the "duffel" bag. It's big enough that when I unzip the bag I can see everything. I like it because it makes for a neat organized appearance. Everything is out of sight, and if you use a waterproof zipper it's completely waterproof. It also keeps stuff clean in a dusty environment.

All I carry in my pack are food, water, cooking gear, toiletries, rain gear and extra clothing layers, along with my hammock/tarp/quilts and something to read, of course. I hang the food, leave the cooking gear out in the "kitchen", water under a tree. I take my rain gear and extra clothing layers that I haven't put on to sleep in a stuff sack and use that as my pillow, I put my book and my glasses in the little Nano 7 bag that's attached to the hammock.

That leaves my pack empty! I can either put it under the pack cover (which I either place on the ground or tie to a nearby tree) or slip it under my legs as extra insulation.

Great stuff, thank you everyone. A lot of options. I especially like the pics of the mini-gear hammocks. that's clever!

I think all four are good, I've used the Tarp and Tree option for tent camping, a gear hammock is more or less similar to a gear loft in a tent (for really light items)

Thought about the pack in a trash bag under the Hammock? The have a seperate small bag with nighttime essentials. A light, reading stuff, hankerchief, etc.

    How do you do it?

    Thanks

I put the stuff I may need through the night (pee bottle, flashlight, .357, water) in the shelf of my hammock. If it's really cold out I don't worry about my pack on the ground on my poncho. If it's warmer and bugs are out I hang it from a tree covered by my poncho on the one I tied my hammock to. Or another tree close by.

Just don't confuse the pee bottle with the water bottle. make sure they are very different sizes.

I use my mostly empty pack as a foot pad, and the pack cover as a gear hammock for things I might want at night. Waterbottles go in boots under hammock, and everything else goes in a trash bag on the ground.

I am similar to crankyoldguy. Besides my food, and kitchen everything is part of my sleep system, so the pack is empty. I just stick it under my hammock.
