Where does the rest of the gear go?

Okay, after you're done chuckling, I'm thinking through this as I await my hammock. In my tent days food was tied up, pack and everything else either in the tent or tent vestibule.

In a hammock, I can see the food tied to a tree; waterproof sack if weather is expected.

Thought about the pack in a trash bag under the Hammock? The have a seperate small bag with nightime essentials. A light, reading stuff, hankerchief, etc.

    How do you do it?

    Thanks
    Gideon

Interesting question. Ask 10 people, get 12 answers. There was a long thread about it but I cannot find it. It boiled down to:

    on something under the tarp
    in a gear hammock
    hung from a convenient tree
    hung from the hammock suspension

part of that is weather dependent, part on what else you have along. I would not trust the same plastic bag that I depend on to keep pack contents dry because it is easier to get holes in an outside bag. OTOH a large plastic bag will keep the rain off your pack and maybe your boots.

The garbage bag idea is fine. Many just lay the pack on a small groundsheet of Tyvek under the hammock. Others, hang the pack from the end of the hammock, sheltered by the tarp. Still others strap the pack to a tree.

Food, and other smellables, needs to be hung in a bear bag far from tent or hammock.

Of course food up in a tree. Book, ear plugs, headlight, etc in hammock with me, all else in pack. If no rain expected, pack hung on most convenient low-hanging branch, if rain then pack is clipped to hammock suspension and underneath tarp.

It honestly depends on how much crud I'm carrying. If it's not much, it goes in the ridgeline organizer on my Hennessy. More than that, it goes on either a CCF pad under my hammock or on my poncho used as a groundsheet. If I was to be truly car camping, well, the car's right there to put extraneous stuff in...

I tried hanging my empty pack from my hammock's suspension at the head end this last weekend and it worked really well. The pack stayed under the tarp and, I feel, would have stayed dry in anything short of a true frog-strangler.

Food, cook kit, and other smelly stuff goes in a bag, hung PCT style, at least a hundred and fifty feet from the hammock.

Depends on how ambitious i am. Most of the time i use the hip belt and sternum to make my pack a tree hugger at the head end of the hammock. Lately though, it's just been laying on they ground cloth in my trash compactor bag.

If if have time and am expecting weather, i have made a tri-pod and sat the pack off the ground in front of me under the tarp.

My waterproof pack cover is set up to work as a gear hammock that hangs under the WBBB. Just the right size for the pack. Go figure.

It's easy enough to hang a half-empty pack from the suspension line at the head end of the hammock. This keeps it close at hand and dry under the tarp. Naturally, the food bag gets hung well away from the hammock.

Mine is spread around....pack-load and weather dependent.
Pack on ground on small plastic. Covered in storm. Items on hammock ridgeline and stuff in mesh organizer off of ridgeline. Food hung.

I like to keep my food in my pack in a gear hammock.
