    Two person hammock?

Has anyone made a two person hammock setup at all? I'm thinking a single piece of silnylon as your hammock, but stitch a channel down the middle with a cord running through it and tied to the trees to separate the two "beds." then use a single ridgeline to keep bug netting off the both of you, and pitch a big tarp over the whole ensemble.

Has anyone done this? Or thought about it at least?

I've been asking similar questions and the most common response is "2 people in 1 hammock is not comfortable". I'm actually trying to decrease the ridge in a ENO double deluxe w/ a structural ridgeline so my wife and I can sleep closer together (not sure if it'll be comfy but it's a fun project).

I think the idea of 1 tarp, 1 bugnet and even 1 underquilt for 2 people would be awesome from a weightsavings perspective.

I'm very interested in the same thing Graelb.
Still have to finish off my Whipped hammock project when I get back home.
However, regarding the two person hammock, I'm thinking more in the lines of a wide bridge hammock.
The two person "mod" would be (also as you mentioned) a line running (guided) underneath the hammock, dividing it into two seperate sleeping pods.
My idea was to tie this line, so it can be loosened and tightened from the inside.
My wife and I like to cuddle up before sleeping, but prefer to sleep in our own part of the bed.
This "mod" would allow us both. If successfull with this project, I might actually convince my wife to go camping with me and the kids.

Rig up something for a few hours or overnight, just to test what it is like to sleep on top of each other. Naps are nice, but get into to REM sleep, and see how comfortable you and your companion are. More than one night, I will bet you will both be very tired of the other person. Togetherness is great, too much togetherness is not nice.

My husband and I owned a long haul trucking company. We slept in the same sleeper, without any problems. I am sure that would not have been the case with a hammock. The hammock is a little tricky to move in when you are in deep sleep and their is another person on top of you or under you. Kind of a logistic issues. Fun for a short period. Sleep deprivation sometimes makes people crabby. LOL

Besure your partner is really as interested as you are. That should make the experience fun for both of you.

Good Luck, have fun with your project. Learning is the spice of life.

Dblhammck is probably the expert around here on 2 person hammocks. He has designed a couple of different models, though not sure what he is currently using.

Good luck with your project, this is a topic that comes up every few months. And most tend to agree its easier to just hang 2 hammocks close to each other.

Personally I've been looking at the Exped-Ergo thinking that a similar design could be the answer to the 2 person hammock.

That looks like a very interesting hammock! (I still wouldn't want to sleep in one hammock with two people though)

I think you would have better luck starting with a bridge hammock design. The problem with a two person gathered end hammock is that in order to be comfortable one has to lay on the diagonal - that gets complicated for two people.

But, I always say, never let anyone tell you "it can't be done "

    working on it

I've been working on the same thing. I'm making a gathered end hammock, 60" 1.9 nylon, then I was going to add 30" of 1.1 nylon to each side to wide the hammock. Is made to still be 11ft long. Then I was going to try it with my wife, and maybe at some shock cord, like nottys style to help us stay in. What do you think? Will it work?

I am just going to have two hammocks side by side with a spreader bar between. This way I don't have to worry about all the stresses on the fabric and/or how it will work if only one person is sleeping in it.
