    portable hammock stand

Hey all so my yard doesn't have many usable trees. The ones I do have are along a fence. Kinda hard to test out tarps hanging parallel to a fence. So I'm thinking I could use one tree and make some sort of stand. I was figuring that a tripod make of 2x4 would work. What do y'all think. Now I'm pretty... L..a....r...g...e..... so its got to be sturdy not to mention safe for my children. I would also like it to be portable.. portable in the sense pack up no.... Just move it around. So ... Where's all those engineers out there ... I know your exists I've read your post

I have thought about this same thing. What I was thinking is that you have a tripod on the one end and a 2x4 running above it to the tree so that when weight is applied the tripod pushes on the tree through the 2x4. The end of the 2x4 would have a t on the end to rest on the tree and this t could be easily tied around the tree to keep tripod from falling away.

I need to draw this up but pretty sure it would work.

Not sure if this will work but sketched it up on the iPad and loaded it to google.

I was thinking that a real easy way of making the tripod and top would be to buy the metal braces that they sell for building swing sets for kids. Two 4x4s one 16 foot 2x6 and one small 2x4 to brace the legs and you would be done. Take longer to round everything up than it take to build.

yep, this works. I suspended one end of a 12' long pipe (two 6' sections joined) from an arrangement around a tree, and rested the other end on an X (two 2x4's) held up by some cord and stakes. There was no compression on the X, the pipe takes it all. Tripod would eliminate the need for cord and stakes.

I third the Turtlelady stand. Easy, portable and made from things you can' actually find without trouble.
