Shallow root system indeed. I took these picture in the GSMNP. The two of could not put our arms around the trunk on the other side. Roots were only about 2~3 feet deep.

Contrary to popular belief, most root systems are quite shallow...

I lost a tree to trenching... installed lawn irrigation, which cut 6' from a small pepper tree... The next winter storm that came through took out the tree...

Since there were other downed trees around, I bet that tree was imperceptibly storm damaged already. I don't think you killed that tree.

If my memory serves me about tree roots. 90% of a trees roots are in the top 18" of the soil.

In school they taught us that the roots spread as wide as the branches.

Time in the woods has taught me otherwise.

The last trip I made on my motorcycle, I camped in a USFS campground on the East side of Sonora Pass near the USMC Mountain Warfare School.

I hung between two Aspen trees, both about 10" in diameter. As soon as I got into the hammock one of the trees just about bent in half leaving me sitting on the ground.

Found another set of trees. Decided to go on a diet!
