    Bottom entry or zip entry?

I am looking into cutting pack weight, and have been checking out hennessy hammocks. I have read reviews on the bottom entry and zip entry models, and wanted to see what the community here likes. So that being said...

Bottom entry or zip entry?....annnnnnd go.

As always, thank you in advance for any information provided.

I had a bottom entry explorer deluxe. Then got a warbonnet blackbird with a side zip. Altogether I would say I like the ability to adjust my under quilt, and go "topless" with the side zip blackbird, but miss the ease of entry especially under a low pitched tarp the hennessy provides.
One way to solve this and something I want to try one day, is to get a bottom entry hennessy, take it to 2qzq to have a zipper installed, and then get one of the Jacks r better down under quilts made for the bottom entry hammock. That would be the most versatile hammock setups IMHO.

I too have a Hennessy with a bottom entry. It had pluses (keeping the bugs out and such) but without the zip, I couldn't access items outside, adjust my UQ's or have breakfast from the hammy! So now my other hammocks are all zip or bottom entry that have been modded to zip as well.

I just sent mine to 2QZQ to have the zipper mod added and the bottom closed.

packeagle has it right. ;-) There is a long thread about the bottom entry:

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...s+bottom+entry

It has a lot of plus's and a few minus's that can be eliminated with a couple of zippers. 3 seasons one needs the bug net. If you want to do winter camping it's not all that expensive to make a hammock without a net. That, in turn, opens up a slew of modifications that can be made for cold weather use.

Thanks for the info. I know it really comes down to personal preference. I was just curious what the hennessy people here had to say about it.

Bottome entry for me with plans one day to send it to 2qzq for a zipper mod whilst retaining the bottom entry.

I’ve been using my bottom entry Hennessy for 4 years and loved it. However, I really wanted to try side entry so I could cook & enjoy breakfast in the hammock. I wasn’t aware of the mods 2QZQ offered, so I purchased a WBBB a few months ago. I’ve only set up the WBBB 3 times, and I am enjoying it, but I was able to dial-in the set-up of the Hennessy quicker than I am the WBBB. In hind sight, I would have rather had my Hennessy modified with zippers instead of buying a new hammock. I will probably still get the mods done so I can share whichever hammock I’m not using with friends, so I can get them hooked on hammocks too!

I never had any trouble with the ENTRY part of bottom entry, nor the exit. Not even while using the HH Super Shelter with it. ( some folks do though) At least not after I quickly got used to it. Some feel it's better when the bugs are bad. It certainly is the quickest closing, as soon as you pull your feet in it snaps closed, so maybe less chance for bugs to follow you in, maybe.

What I do miss with a BE is being able to reach out of the hammock, mainly to check on or adjust quilts or HHSSs with added insulation(like jackets) or such. So if I was mainly still using a BE HH, I would def have the 2Q zip mod added. I think I would like their mod better than the stock HH zipper, and I would still have the BE option.

But, while I had no problem with the BE at all, I really have not had occasion to use it on my HH that I removed the net on. But maybe I would if the net was still there and the bugs were bad. But since I have started using Permethrin, I can't really imagine bugs being that big of a problem.

One final possible benefit. If you are using a really small tarp- like the HH stock diamond- and condensation is all over the inside of your tarp which is pulled down in storm mode very close to the hammock, you can stay drier with BE. Because in those conditions it will be harder to avoid rubbing against your tarp with side entry. With larger tarps this won't be as big of an issue.
