Tree Sap Removal ?

Hey gang,

Just wondering how you remove tree sap from your hammock equipment.

I live in an area that has many spruce and fir trees. Lots of sap from those trees. Usually my tree huggers get sap on them and I wanted to know how to get it off before it gets on everything else. I always carry a large ziplock bag to carry out my garbage and I put my straps in that if they have sap on them.

Any tips on how to clean sap off gear would be great. Thanks.

Hey Bluefin, if I remember correctly, one of the ways is using something that is oilbased on it. Being tree huggers a small stain (if one) hopefully won't bother you. I have heard that leaving peanut butter works as does a cleaning product called Orange Glo. Also margerine as well. I have even used a little olive oil. Easy enough to test before full blown usage. And of course there is always Goo Gone ( not my preference)!

I've used methyl hydrate and goo gone before. I've read people suggest turpentine, and even margerine. I've also tried margerine before. Works ok on small amount of sap but for thick caked on stuff I'd go with something else.

I once used rubbing alcohol and elbow grease, and got a lot of tree sap off of my clothes.

Thanks dragon360, I just have a small amount of sap on the huggers, I have te Orange Glow andwill try it.

Olive oil works great on sap. I've used it on my car, hands, and a number of other things and it always seems to work quickly and no worry about chemicals.

+1 on the margarine. Works great and is non-toxic. Rub it in to the tree straps with a soft bristle brush, then rinse them a couple of times with sunlight dishsoap

+1 on the goo gone or goo gone extreme. I managed to get a bunch of pine sap out of a fleece jacket that I thought was history. I'm not sure if it might damage a DWR finish so you might test it on something else first.
