I would skip the walmart hiking poles for the bridge and get some of the cheaper Leki poles.

I tried some Komperdell hiking poles with the wire nut trick and had the tipped pole end fold over blow out and shot through my hammock about like a crossbow. Luckily nobody was standing on the other side.

I think there is a safe way to do it though. The Leki bottom end has a shelf on the tip in the fat area and I think that is where it should be loaded not on the very tip.

Also the plastic expander nut inside the Lekis are more substantial and one piece and that is what the wood dowel will rest on.

I was going to have a structural engineer run loads on the critical areas just out of curiosity, but I would guess the axial load on the sides at the pole ends are close to your body weight.

I bought some Leki Eagles to try out but never figured out how to deal with the handle end. I cant remove it and not sure about drilling through it.

Poles from Quest weigh about 10 oz.

    See above for the blowout.

I noticed that the spreader bars JRB sells claim to be 8oz. Anyone know the width of them? I couldnt find specifics. A little pricey at $17 if you ask me but maybe worth it if I can save 6-7 oz.

Just an update on my version -- sewing through the cord at the tips of the suspension triangles was enough to lock the hammock in place on the cords / keep it from shifting around. Threw a ridgeline up there; it's pretty comfy now (ridge at knees is gone with proper hang; I think I see what you meant, Ed).

My wife's out of town right now, so I stayed up last night and put together a shell for Karo-style topquilt (3" loft, going to fill with ~18oz of 550FP down tonight when I get home). I'll probably test the hammock/quilt/my new Exped downmat out tonight for actual sleeping; I'll report back if it implodes on me or anything

I was gonna use "pirogue" - a kind of canoe used down in Louisiana (where I'm from). Tested the hammock out last night - apparently the material I used as the main body is a pretty effective vapor barrier. That plus my new winter down blanket (~3.5" loft, way too warm for the 45 degrees that it got down to) had me sweating like crazy.

Hammock itself held up just fine, though. Super comfortable, too, and plenty of visibility (which I did *not* have in my first DIY bridge; feels like I'm lying in a ditch).

Im gonna take a crack at this as soon as some materials come in the mail. I only ordered 20' of tubular webbing should that be enough. I think it should be because I plan on making this a pretty short hammock. Im 67" and I was goin to add 1' to each side for some room

I use the ones from Quest Outfitters -- the 0.625" diameter 18" long bars make 36" pretty conveniently. I've broken a hiking pole before; I don't mind carrying the extra weight.
