A failed DIY tarp -Lessons Learned from a trip

At Black Gap shelter, on the Approach Trail going to Springer, a Thunderstorm blew in about 10:00pm sometime. I used a spray on silicone based application to make the flys water-REPELLANT and didn't expect a monsoon to blow in. needless to say, we got wet.

Here is a video of our explaining just what happened.

I know some have had good results with the making of their own silicone nylon, I cant seem to get the swing of it, so i will order my nylon already pregnant. with the silicone.

It's been asked and answered several times here that the spray-on silicones will not produce silnylon or a waterproof tarp.

But thanks for reinforcing that lesson.

Sorry about your tarp dude--------speaking from experiance, its kind of hard to tell the difference between dwr and sil. I'm really glad you posted this---I was thinking about using silicon spray to make untreated nylon water proof. Needless to say, I think I'll pass on that idea. Thanks for the post!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

There is more than one kind of Silicone. It is a family pf products. I think you have a silicone oil based product and you need a silicon rubber based product.
