Why did my HH hex tarp get me soaked?

I couldn't use the hammock because of lack of trees, but I did tie up to one tree and used a pole I cut and put my tent under it. The tarp leaked and was soaking wet underneath. It was real nice and flat and looked like it should of.

I think we're going to need some more info. Did a seam leak or did rain blow in under the edge? Were you laying in a low spot so you ended up in a puddle? Details man, details!

Was there wind blowing rain up through the sides? Was it raining hard enough that you were still getting groundsplash up onto the sides of your tent? How high/low was your tarp pitched in relationship to your tent?

The tarp was about 4 ft off the ground with my tent about 8 inches under. It rained steady for about 2 hours and when we decided it wasn't gonna quit, we started tearin down camp in the rain. I thought I should be able to, for the most part, tear my tent down under my tarp and stay relatively dry. Well my tent was already wet.
    Tarp was not touching tent.
No splash up should have occured from just grass especially with my tent underneath.
I was not in a low spot.
I don't know if a seam leaked. Looked like drops dripping everywear. I was in a hurry with the lihghtning around so I didn't look too hard at it.

Did you put a tarp under your tent? If not, that is how the water seeped into the tent.

Was there standing water on top of the tarp (did you have it pitched at an angle, or flat?)?

Only reason I can see that water would have come through the tarp would be if it was standing on top of the tarp.

Next question would be if your tarp was PU-coated, or silnylon? Also...brand new tarp, or old?

In hard rains I've had "mist" come through sil-nylon tarps.

We went on a hang this weekend and it rained all night. Put my pack under my hammock on wal mart tarp and it was dry when I got up the next morning. I did not get wet in my hammock either, and it rained hard. All the tent campers (2) had issues with water in the tents. Love my hammock.

Do you have a separate rigeline running under the tarp or individual lines on each end? If you had a bunch of drops hanging on the underside it could have been from rain running down the ridgeline. Water could actually run down the tree and hit your suspension then follow it downhill to the next lower spot (tarp body). I don't know quite how much water we're talking about but it's a possibility. A simple piece of string or loop dangling just before the edge of the tarp will normally divert that water away. Do a search for "drip rings" or "drip lines" and you'll probably find a few threads.

Tarp is new. Pitched at an angle.

Zukiguy, I think you may have nailed it. It was wet under most of it but it could have been due to the rain runnin down the lines.

    Mystery solved??
